“Brainchain is very valuable for our portfolio companies when it comes to challenging and refining the strategic innovation roadmap and building strong patents. It’s a pleasure to experience the team’s unique expertise. What we find particularly helpful is that Brainchain’s roots lie in patent commercialization — giving them a strong focus on the impact and market value of innovations and patents.”
Lothar Stadler
Managing Partner, Epoona Impact Invest

“For us as a startup, time is one of the most critical factors – and that’s exactly why I value working with Brainchain so much. Instead of building lengthy processes or creating additional overhead, they work with exceptional efficiency and focus. When talking with Robert and Urs, it’s immediately clear that deep technical understanding meets real-world experience. Often, just a short exchange is enough to turn complex ideas into clearly structured concepts that we can apply and implement right away. What I particularly appreciate: the collaboration never feels cumbersome but rather smooth and constructive. Brainchain not only helps us strategically build our patent portfolio but also supports us in making the right decisions to secure our technology in the long run. For me, this partnership gives us speed without compromising on quality.”

Concrete cases
ZITT Motoren AG
“This innovation has been the foundation of our growth in the domestic market over the past years. The European patent gives us the ability to negotiate and collaborate with international partners from a position of strength. Brainchain has been supporting us for many years, creating the strategic foundation and new opportunities for access.”
Daniel Hüsser
Managing Owner, ZITT Motoren AG

What has changed?
Building on strong expertise in ventilation technology, a modular IE5 drive system in the 1 to 33 kW power range was developed through systematic technology research and lateral thinking. A broadly formulated European patent was granted for the functional principle.
The result from a technical perspective:
Compared to leading suppliers of EC drives, the solution achieved a system efficiency that is 4 to 19 percent higher, with improved availability thanks to its modular design. An additional digitalization feature enables remote commissioning and service.
The result from a business perspective:
The patented IE5 drive enabled significant growth in the Swiss project business and became the foundation for a highly successful company sale.
Silana GmbH
“The targeted focus on strategic IP has played an essential role for Silana. We ensured that our innovations are not only protected but also leveraged as strategic assets. This has proven indispensable for our credibility with investors. BrainChain AG supported us significantly in this process with their expertise, enabling us to build a clear and well-thought-out IP architecture.
With this strong foundation, we are now entering the next phase: the first deliveries of our sewing robots to Löffler and Trigema are planned for 2025 — a decisive step toward automated, sustainable textile production that enables a local, resource-efficient industry without overproduction.”
Michael Hofmannrichter
Co-Founder & CEO, Silana

Securing the innovation roadmap early
Technology-driven companies — including startups — should identify alternative pathways on their innovation roadmap early on and secure them with IP rights, even when financial resources may seem limited.
Silana: From vision to international expansion
The success of this approach is demonstrated by Silana GmbH, founded in May 2022. Born from the vision of fully automated garment production and launched by three master’s students in Vienna, the company is now well-funded, employs 15 people in Vienna and New York, and collaborates closely with global textile brands.
Workshops, patents, and new ventures
Shortly after its founding, a strategic sparring session and a two-day inventor workshop took place in November 2022. During these sessions, critical ideas and alternatives were explored — resulting in five strategic patent families, additional solution concepts, and even a joint company founded for the “tamper-proof coding of textiles.” This example shows: the value of a strong innovation roadmap combined with targeted IP positions is immense.

From costly problem to sustainable opportunity
For nearly 20 years, Hans Werner, owner of a mid-sized family business in the municipal sector, has pursued a vision: to turn grass, leaves, and trimmings from public green spaces — previously costly and environmentally harmful to dispose of — into a high-quality fuel with pellet-grade quality. After multimillion-euro investments in a pilot plant and successful tests with municipal utilities, industry, and research partners, setbacks arose, and the project’s continuation was at risk.
Brainchain brings new momentum to Florafuel
In 2022, a mutual business partner connected Hans Werner with Brainchain. Through an intensive collaboration, the commercialization strategy was redefined, and key success factors were newly established. The process not only created a clear perspective but also ignited a shared enthusiasm: Hans Werner, as a pragmatic industry expert, and Brainchain, as an experienced technology commercializer, complement each other perfectly. In 2024, Brainchain became a shareholder in Florafuel GmbH, took on the business development role, and strengthened the patent portfolio.
On the path toward contributing to the heating transition
Today, Florafuel is engaged in advanced project developments with ALBA Berlin, which plans to produce fuel from Berlin’s green waste. At the same time, the company is part of the publicly funded research project MooReturn, developing fuels and high-quality semi-finished materials for the packaging, construction, and chemical industries from the cultivation of re-wetted peatlands. With its first reference plant operating 24/7, Florafuel could become a key contributor to the heating transition for cities and municipalities — while making a significant contribution to decarbonization.
